I interviewed Gloria Steinem in January, 2015 at the San Miguel Writers Conference. I was with her for about an hour. I am not easily impressed, and I’m not a spiritual person, but at the end of our time together I realized I had been in the presence of a “Gandhi-like” being.
In honor of the passing of this great person, here is a rebroadcast of my interview with her.
After the interview she told me about the abortion she had in London in 1957 when she was on her way to India.
Just out of college, she had no interest in having a baby or starting a family. While in London she found a doctor who could do the illegal abortion. The doctor said, “I will do this abortion for you but I have two requirements. One is that you never tell anyone my name, and two, you live the fullest possible life you can.”
Gloria Steinem went on to live a life of such magnitude that she literally helped shape the last half of the Twentieth Century.
