Celebrating Lebanon and Labor Day

Hooray for Redwood City

Redwood City has a vibrant downtown. The city celebrates its diversity. There is always something interesting going on. Last weekend it was Lebanon. Had to video these amazing young dancers. Reminded me of the clog dancers in Appalachia.

Workers

I’m writing this on Labor Day. Every time we have work done on our house, I am reminded of how hard it can be. I am also reminded or how grateful I am to have been born into a white, middle-class family that valued education. I get no credit for any of that. The least I can do is acknowledge the workers through photography.

I talk to these men about their work, their green cards, sending money back to Mexico. Some have kids in college, some in apprentice programs. If we send all these people away, who will do this work? The white, middle-class art history majors?

I keep thinking about what Voltaire said: “The comfort of the rich depends on an abundant supply of the poor.”

The dancers are wonderful! Great to watch. –Living in Mexico in a community where lots of middle class withes come to live comfortably because they can easily afford housekeepers and gardeners, we are always aware of the huge truth of Voltaire’s statement. We talk about it all the time. I could write a whole paper about how it works in this town. There is a lot of harmony and love between the two distinct classes. Our helpers are well-paid and much loved. — But of course, there is more to the story — for another day.
