iPhone 11 Road Test
Something new and shiny from Apple? Hmmm, better buy it. Over the years, I have taken hundreds of great photos at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Last year, though, they announced that cameras with interchangeable lenses will not be allowed. So last week, Apple comes out with this new iPhone that has three lenses, including a “telephoto” (actually 52mm – not that telephoto). I decided that was the solution to my problem. Bingo. Bought a new phone / camera. I used it for several days prior to going to MJF. Here are the results. The new camera works great, close up. At a distance, though, it can get a little fuzzy. Well I’m SOLD on the new iPhone — except I seriously doubt the photos would be the same at all if I were taking them. These stunning photos and videos have a LOT to do with the photographer!!

Ben and I were there on Saturday. We chose that day because we wanted to see Kenny Barron. It was worth the wait. We hung around the grounds saw a couple of big bands. A women’s jazz collective (a quintet) played on the education stage. Saw a guy named Derrick Hodge. Reminded me a lot of Jaco Pastorius. BTW, I bought the iPhone 10 when it came out. I think it’s still a pretty good product. Nothing like manufactured obsolescence. See you on the 10th.
You don’t need a telephoto, Rick, because you get really close. Great work, no matter what you have in your hand.
EXCELLENT photos! Hard to believe they were made using a cell phone. I guess, as Susan said, it’s got a lot to do with the photographer. You have an artist’s eye. I guess that make you an artist. Congratulations.
