It’s the music of a person’s adolescence that is most effective in reaching people with dementia as well, a way of establishing precious moments of connection.
As for older adults learning musical instruments, my sister is taking an organ class (using Dena Papas’s approach) specifically for elders at an organ store. She’s loving it and learning to play even though she never played an instrument before. She may not be considered a great player but she’s having fun and I like seeing how much pleasure it gives her.
